The power of hair contouring

Major changes aren't always big-ticket changes. Subtlety goes a long way, as these photos show. Before things looked good, but after ... wow! That is the subdued beauty of hair contouring.

Depth through tones

The artistry involved in hair contouring makes you into the masterpiece. Dark tones create shadows, and these visually reduce the length of the face and make it appear narrower, while lighter tones, which reflect the light, create the look of an elongated face. It's all about balance, creating the optical illusion of a more oval, more symmetrical shape.

Accentuate the positives

We've all learnt (or at least practiced!) how to mix and blend makeup to enhance our cheekbones and make our eyes shimmer. Before and after photos are always inspiring. And sometimes they're a little like a game of 'spot-the-difference' – we can see the change, but not always immediately know how it happened! Through tailor made colour techniques the "after" results of hair contouring are incredible, but still look natural, and are specifically created for each person.

Bespoke style

The individual approach that hair contouring demands is one of its strongest advantages. Your hair stylist works with you to identify the shape of your face and how to enhance your best features ... then through precisely applied colour and highlights, they frame your face to create your new look. The before and after won't be a shock, your friends will still recognise you – but Hair Contouring will be your best kept beauty secret. It's been the beauty go-to of the stars for a long time, and now you can experience Hair Contouring at exclusive L'Oréal Professionnel salons for yourself.

Summer Hair Rehab

If sunshine, surf and swimming have left your hair looking worse for wear, it's time to send it to rehab! Here's how to detoxify your locks from summer-afflicted damage.

Post-Pool Problems

A summer of endless dips can result in hair that looks dull and dry. The main culprit? Chlorine! Get on top of the damage by introducing a leave-in serum to your hair care routine to restore moisture and shine – try L'Oréal Professionnel Pro Fiber Rectify Leave-In Serum. Also, if you've still got plenty of pool days ahead of you, be proactive about keeping your hair chlorine-free. Always rinse your hair with tap water both before and after a swim – and consider wearing a swim cap.

Meanwhile for blondes, the combination of your hair colour and the pool water may leave your locks an unsightly shade! Invest in a clarifying shampoo to take that green tint away. (You may also want to consider going a slightly darker shade for summer.)

Brittle Beach Hair

Textured, beachy hair can look fantastic – when it's intentional! Then there's the other kind that comes from days of subjecting your hair to beach conditions – and it's not a good look! Overexposure to sand and seawater roughens the hair's cuticle layer, which causes the hair shaft to swell and feel dry - and may even cause scalp sensitivity. Swap to a gentle shampoo like L'Oréal Professionnel Sensi Balance to refresh the hair and soothe the scalp, without agitating it further.

Sun Damaged Locks

We're all well versed about the importance of protecting our skin from the harsh and damaging rays of the sun. But what about your hair? Overexposure to sun rays can have the effect of breaking down the hair's protective cuticle layer. So if you've spent loads of time in the sun, you may notice your hair is looking a little drab as it's more prone to damage. If this has occurred, sealing down the hair cuticle is top priority. Plus don't forget to always pop on a headscarf or hat to offer your hair some protection before heading out into the great outdoors!

A Guide To Home Hair Pampering

Indulge your hair (and yourself!) in a little R&R with a home pampering session. Follow these steps for a complete DIY hair care ritual.

1. Set The Scene

A home pampering experience starts with creating the perfect sanctuary. Make sure the bathroom is spotless, dim the lights, play some relaxing music and scatter a few candles around the space. You'll also want to be organised so that everything you need is at your fingertips – gather all your products along with some fresh towels and maybe even a fluffy robe and slippers!

2. Lather Up

Let the pampering begin! Start by rinsing your hair in lukewarm water and then use a shampoo suited to your hair type (ask your stylist for guidance) and double cleanse your hair. Take your time, particularly on the first wash, and concentrate on kneading the scalp for a luxurious head massage. Not only does this feel sensational, but it also stimulates the follicles. Don't forget to rinse out your shampoo thoroughly after each application.

3. Mask Moment

If you're lucky enough to have a bath, hop in for a relaxing soak. Otherwise, pop on your robe and find a quiet space where you can relax. Before you get too comfortable, apply your chosen hair mask. For weakened hair, consider L'Oréal Professionnel Absolut Repair Lipidium Masque or for coloured hair, L'Oréal Professionnel Lumino Contrast Masque may be beneficial. If you're unsure of which mask to use, ask your stylist for guidance. Apply the mask and allow it to sit on the head as per the instructions and while the mask is working its magic, make a conscious effort to close your eyes, breathe deeply or even meditate.

4. Replenishing Oil

Once you've rinsed off your hair mask, take the time to carefully towel dry your hair, or blow dry it on a low heat setting. When the hair is 70% dry take a nourishing hair oil like L'Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil Sérum de Force and rub a few drops of between your palms to warm up the product. Then, disperse the oil through your hair by combing it through with your fingers – it should feel luxurious and give your locks a hydration boost.

By now you should be feeling thoroughly rejuvenated – so pour yourself a cup of herbal tea, slip into your robe and enjoy that relaxed mindset as your hair air dries. Bliss!

Looking for the ultimate date night hair inspo? Take a page out of Hailey Baldwin's red-carpet playbook.

Getting glammed up for an evening out with that special someone is all part of the date night experience. Whether it's for Valentine's Day or another occasion, the goal is to channel a look that's romantic, alluring and just a little sensual. If you're feeling stuck for hairstyle ideas then look no further than our favourite 'It' girl, Hailey Baldwin. The newly named international spokeswoman for L'Oréal Professionnel has proven time and again that she's a master of sexy statement red carpet hairstyles. Take your pick from these date night worthy looks...

Tousled top knot

It's not quite a pony tail and not quite a bun – but it's undeniably gorgeous! This fun and flirty tousled topknot almost looks like a high ponytail due to the loose locks cascading out of the base. Hailey's styling choices are spot on too – she's paired her 'do with a chic ensemble and sophisticated make-up. The best part about this look is its polished yet low-maintenance, making it a versatile look for wherever date night takes you.

Messy ballerina bun

As far as date worthy hairstyles go, this feminine ballerina bun is a classic. Follow Hailey's lead by incorporating loads of volume at the roots for maximum impact. To make it happen, use a tail comb to tease the front section into a bouffant before fashioning the lengths into a ballerina bun – and don't forget to finish with L'Oréal Professionnel Infinium Hairspray. Also, note how this style shows off Hailey's artfully-placed blonde highlights. Perfection!

Sleek, chic lengths

Up-do's aren't your only date night option! If you prefer to wear your hair out, then why not dabble with this sleek, wet-look hairstyle. The secret to striking the perfect wet-look finish (without going overboard) comes down to concentrating your product application around the roots. Take a small amount of gel and rub between the palms. Then slick it over the sides of your head above the ears and then use a comb to distribute.

How to get more out of your color

Perfecting your date night hairstyle is about more than just styling – it's also about making the most of your hair colour. To give your current shade a boost, try adding the L'Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil range into your hair care routine. Inspired by the tradition of Indian oil bathing, the Mythic Oil collection leaves your hair thoroughly nourished and super shiny. Take a few moments to truly indulge your locks before you get dressed up for a night on the town!

Three Must-Try Men's Hairstyles From Fashion Week 2017

Gentlemen, are you struggling for hairstyle inspiration? Then join us for a quick catwalk tour to see what men's hair looks are trending this season...

Ultra-short and a tad disheveled

Listen up. Prominent ears were almost like an accessory on this season's runway thanks to an ultra-short haircut. In order to accentuate this facial structure, the model's hair was kept super short on the sides with some disheveled volume left at the front and top of the head. It's not quite the dramatic undercut look that has been popular in recent years but rather a more subtle take on the style.

DIY: Scrunch a curl-enhancing gel like L'Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Wild Stylers into your hair after showering. Then blow-dry from the back to the front of your head, tousling with your fingers as you go.

Suave, slick and side parted

With a nod to 1950s Hollywood actors, (here's looking at you, Clark Gable) this super sleek style is an easy one to replicate on short hair. All you need is to take a smidge of gel, such as L'Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Fix Max, and use it to slick the hair over and across to one side. Bonus points for teaming this look with a carefully-groomed moustache.

DIY: Spread the gel along a deep side part, using a comb to create a perfect line. To give it hold and sheen, finish with a mist of L'Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Wet Domination Shower Shine

Don't hate your curls, embrace them! This season, both men's and women's fashion shows have seen a return to natural textured hairstyles. The goal is to work with what you've got and use styling and products to enhance it. The key with this look is to find the balance between curls that aren't too tight or loose – and with no frizz.

DIY: Blow drying your hair with a diffuser attachment will help your curls maintain their shape – but be sure to first apply a curl enhancing cream like L'Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Dual Stylers Bouncy & Tender.
